Due West, our inaugural wine, originates from Nuns Canyon – a steep and exposed hillside vineyard perched at 1400 feet, facing due west – and is classically “California” in its powerful, lush and opulent style.

Hailing from the red volcanic soils of Moon Mountain, this Cabernet Sauvignon embodies a beautiful dichotomy: power and complexity married with sophistication and elegance. This deep garnet-hued wine opens with lively aromas of purple mountain violets encased in dark black fruit and a touch of leather. A full entry coats the palate, bursting with lush flavors of ripe plum and black currant with accents of warm baking spices and sweet herbs. Broad tannins support a lingering finish accented with graphite and dark-roasted coffee. This wine is beautiful now but will age gracefully for at least 20 years.  

Blocks 4 and 21, steeply sloped at 2-15% and 15-30% respectively, were hand-picked at the first light of dawn, and optically sorted at the winery. The blocks were combined in gravity-fed tanks where they were cold-soaked for 5 days and co-fermented including a 26-day extended maceration.
The wine was aged 20 months in 18 thin-stave French oak barrels. Prior to bottling, the 5 best barrels were selected for the final blend which aged 1 year in bottle.

This is a new project from the Bundschu family of Gundlach Bundschu, a chance to highlight some high-quality fruit from the new Moon Mountain AVA. Toasty in oak and a hint of bacon, it’s big, chewy, sanguine and rich in coffee and chocolate, with mountain-proud tannins that add structure and complexity amid the power.

Containing just a 1% dash of Petite Verdot, the 2013 Due West Nuns Canyon Vineyard presents a deep garnet color and rather earthy / savory nose, with notes of dusty earth, underbrush, leather, dried Mediterranean herbs and beef drippings hints. Showing some evolution on the full-bodied palate, it has velvety tannins and plenty of opulent fruit with some exotic spices coming through on the long, dried mulberry-laced finish. It is drinking well now and should keep for another 6 to 8 years. 106 cases were produced.
